Pet Photo Day 2008 is now completed! Peg Jackson, of Peg Jackson Photography, did another fantastic job getting all of the pets to smile for the camera (one Pit did exactly that) and making them look their absolute best. Together, we made $1985, which is enough for the new police dog's ballistic vest! This year was a lot of fun. I wish to thank everyone who came in and donated for this important cause, Officers Klein and Miller with their canine partners "EJ" and "Joe" for showing up and telling stories about their jobs and how their partners are used to 'combat evil', Peg Jackson for doing another wonderful job, and our clients who had appointments on April 26 for their patience with the bit of chaos in the reception area.
It is now officially foxtail season. On May 1, we removed our first foxtail of the year from the nose of a cute Pug mix. Please monitor where your pet goes, and if it suddenly begins sneezing and rubbing its nose, or shaking its head, aggressively, please bring your pet in immediately. It was very easy to remove this latest foreign body because it was not very far in to the nasal cavity. For those of you that don't know what a foxtail is, it is a California native grass awn that has barbs which allow it to stick onto fur and work it way into holes, through skin, etc and cause irritation, pain, and infections. We have found them in every orifice, between toes, in lymph nodes, and underneath skin. There is a Giardia outbreak in Silicon Valley. We are continuing to see a large number of Giardia cases. If your pet is showing signs of loose stools or diarrhea, please bring them in for an exam, and bring a fresh fecal sample with you so we can submit it for testing. Giardia is treatable, but it also a potential human health risk! Because of the extended problem, we are now offering a special with our annual exam: a wellness fecal test with a Giardia test for only $44. This is a $22 savings and will ensure your pet's feces is Giardia-free.
Interested in getting a puppy? Be very careful of going online or looking in the newspaper for purebred puppies. A lot of the "breeders" are intermediaries for puppy mills, which are facilities where dogs are kept in deplorable conditions and many puppies have health problems. If you visit the puppy, and the parents of the dog are not there, please walk away, no matter how cute the puppy is. We do not want to support puppy mills.
Dr. Sawyer's dog, "Tyler", has a neurological problem that is currently undiagnosed, which causes paralysis of some of his facial nerves, a head tilt, and instability when walking. Both a CT Scan and MRI have been performed, as well as a spinal tap for spinal fluid analysis, and everything is normal. I'll post what his disease ends up being once we get a diagnosis. (Sometimes, even the doctor's pets run up large bills with no answers at the end)
